Jefferson Parish deputy shoots man in Marrero after Mystic Krewe of Music parade

A Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a 59-year-old man who is accused of jumping a curb and driving toward her while she directed traffic after the Mystic Krewe of Music parade in Marrero Monday night.

The man was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans with a gunshot wound to his shoulder, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said. The man was in stable condition, and his injury is not life-threatening.

The shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. in the 5900 block of Lapalco Boulevard.

The man tried to exit the parking lot by driving over the curb, and his sport utility vehicle approached the deputy from behind. The man did not stop as directed, and she fired at him, striking him once, Lopinto said. It was not clear how many shots were fired.

“Clearly the car was moving forward right at our deputy and caused her to react,” he said.

Lopinto did not identify the deputy but referred to the deputy as “her” twice in his statements, which he made at a press conference at the scene at 10:30 p.m.

Lopinto said body camera footage will be reviewed and investigators are taking statements from witnesses and the deputy and will get one from the victim. He said more details will be available “in the next couple days.”

The sheriff said it is not yet known whether alcohol was involved, though he invoked previous incidents in New Orleans where people leaving parade scenes intoxicated have killed or injured others.

“Our deputies are doing their job in order to clear the intersection and get the people out of here, and safely,” he said. “They have a job to do in order to protect the intersection (and) the people coming out and in this case the guy ignored her commands and certainly was shot ignoring those commands.”
