Jean-Michel Othoniel is a French artist best known for jewelry-like sculptures that glimmer with complex undertones. Following a solo exhibition in Tokyo, Perrotin is currently showcasing his second solo show with the gallery in Hong Kong.
For nearly three decades, the Saint-Etienne-based artist has worked with some of the finest glass-blowers in the world to create enchanting sculptures that meditate on the dualities between fragility and strength, to the infinite and the tangible. Othoniel’s aesthetic seeks to transcend the power of opposites in order to expand our conception of reality and open up new realms of wonders.
For the show at Perrotin, Othoniel presents various cosmic sculptures that have been manufactured by both Indian glassblowers from near the ancient capital of Agra and artisans from the Italian island of Murano — the latter of which has produced some of the finest glassware since the 13th Century.
Wild Knot (2021) continutes a series first developed in 2015, where a constellation of white and red beads hover in the middle of the space in a shape that references a ‘Borromean knot,’ a symbol notably used by French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan to describe the connection between the imaginary, the symbolic and the real. Jean-Michel Othoniel is on view at Perrotin Hong Kong until February 26, 2022.
Elsewhere, Veazey Studio unveils the Atlanta Rap Map.
