Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics Agree to the Richest Contract In NBA History

It’s payday for Boston Celtics guard/forward Jaylen Brown: he and the Celtics have agreed to a five-year, $304M USD supermax contract extension. Brown’s new contract, first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic, is the richest in NBA history, surpassing the five-year, $276M USD pact that Nikola Jokić signed with the Denver Nuggets in June. Brown’s contract is fully guaranteed and includes a trade kicker (meaning Brown would receive a percentage of his salary as a bonus if he were to be traded) but no player option.

After being selected 3rd overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, Brown made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and blossomed into an All-Star by 2021. He had his finest season during the recent 2023-23 campaign, averaging 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, all of which bested or tied his previous career highs, and was named to the All-NBA Second Team. The Celtics fell to the Miami Heat in a back-and-forth seven-game Eastern Conference Finals, but Brown’s resigning ensures that the Celtics will move into the 2023-24 season with a new “Big Three” of Jayson Tatum, the newly-acquired Kristaps Porzingis, and, of course, Brown himself.

Elsewhere in basketball news, Bronny James suffered cardiac arrest at a recent workout, but was released from the hospital, and is in stable condition.
