Fresh off a recent planter release with Case Studyo, Javier Calleja is showcasing a new presentation of work at Almine Rech‘s London outpost. Still on Time marks the third show with the gallery as the Spanish artist features his expressionistic children across a set of new drawings and paintings.
There’s an immediate feeling of optimism upon seeing Calleja’s cheerful characters. Comprised of around 20 new paintings and works on paper, his wide eyed figures “subtly jeer at the absurdity of our time,” according to art critic Charles Barachon, as they “resist the world, sometimes with tenderness, sometimes with a casual rebelliousness, and always with a keen sense of humor or touch of irony.”
Hope amidst uncertainty has always been a hallmark of Calleja’s work and his latest paintings echo Barachon’s sentiment as they remind you that “This is Your Lucky Day” and to always “Be Sweet.” The two-floor exhibition recently opened in London and will remain on view at Almine Rech until July 29.
