James Murphy has shared a new statement about the state of LCD Soundsystem, taking to Facebook to update fans on the band’s recent activities. In the post, Murphy explained his and the band’s reasoning behind their recent residency arrangements, wrote about their Saturday Night Live appearance, and also discussed their 20th anniversary. Since their December residency at Brooklyn Steel, LCD Soundsystem have announced shorter residencies in London, Boston, and Philadelphia. Three of the 20 Brooklyn shows had to be canceled due to rising COVID-19 cases in New York, and Murphy said they would not be rescheduled. In the statement, Murphy explained that the demands of album-centric touring cycles were counter-productive to the band’s creative efforts, and that the residency format for the New York–based outfit seemed to fit them better. “Maybe we’ll do something like that every year. Just stay in shape, if that makes sense,” he wrote.
Outside of the residencies, LCD Soundsystem are set to headline the return of the This Ain’t No Picnic Festival in California this summer. There’s also a DFA 20th anniversary party in New York at the end of the month. Murphy further explained in his statement that the band’s current pace is “not overwhelming, so [he] can work on new music and [they] can all be human beings.” He continued, “Maybe we’ll just play other places next year, moving around to cities we like to play, where we’re wanted, etc.”
