Instagram Rolls Out Short Text Posts Called ‘Notes’

Instagram has rolled out a new feature called Notes, allowing users to share short posts of up to 60 characters. The company said it landed on Notes after running tests, learning that people are seeking out a streamlined way to share what’s on their mind and jumpstart conversations.

Although Notes sounds a lot like Twitter, the posts will only appear in a user’s inbox. Rather than a DM, though, a Note floats at the top of the inbox, where it’ll remain for 24 hours, similar to posting an Instagram Story.

To leave friends a Note, a user crafts a message, then selects followers that follow them back or people on their Close Friends list.

Along with Notes, Instagram is rolling out a few more updates designed to help encourage connectivity and collaboration. The platform has updated Add Yours in Stories so that users can now invite their friends to respond to prompts. It also launched Candid, a type of Story that can only be shown to those who also post their own Candid. In a BeReal-like fashion, users can opt to receive a daily notification reminding them that it’s time for a Candid selfie.

Instagram didn’t specify when Notes will be fully rolled out or if it’ll be available globally.
