Iconic 1997 Mercedes-AMG CLK GTR GT1 Up For Auction

Today, March 6, marks the last chance to bid on the iconic 1997 Mercedes-AMG CLK GTR GT1, recently displayed at the debut ModaMiami event and currently up for auction via a Sotheby’s Sealed lot presented by RM Sotheby’s.

This specific example, chassis number 004, is a car with a formidable history in the racing realm. Known as the most victorious CLK GTR of its time, this iconic “Silver Arrow” clinched the 1997 FIA GT Championship, marking a monumental chapter in Mercedes-Benz’s storied racing heritage.

The CLK GTR GT1, driven by the acclaimed Bernd Schneider, not only secured the Drivers’ Championship for Schneider but also led Mercedes-AMG to win the Constructors’ Championship in the 1997 season. This vehicle boasts an impressive record, with four victories, two additional podiums, five pole positions and five fastest laps across the 11 rounds of the championship, demonstrating its dominance.

Constructed as part of a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Motorsport and AMG, this CLK GTR GT1 was the first of just four examples ever made. Its creation marked a pivotal moment for Mercedes-Benz, redefining the standards of racing sports cars and showcasing the brand’s engineering prowess. The car’s journey from conception to championship victory is a testament to Mercedes-AMG’s ambition for supremacy in motorsport, achieving what many considered the pinnacle of racing success.

This racing marvel remained with Mercedes until 2015 when it was sold to its first and only private owner. Its significance extends beyond its track victories, representing a piece of motorsport history with a pedigree that is unmatched by any other vehicle in private hands. The CLK GTR GT1’s story is one of innovation, speed and triumph, from its rapid development and homologation to its dominance on the race tracks.

Looking ahead, the CLK GTR GT1 is poised to compete for Best in Class honors at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, showcasing its enduring legacy and appeal. While an official estimate has not been shared by the auction house, chassis 004 is expected to break records and we’ll be sure to update you with the figure once the auction closes.
