Last fall, Diddy returned to his alma mater Howard University to fulfill a promise of $1 million USD. The cheque was meant to be a part of Diddy’s reaffirmation of unwavering commitment to the preserving the HBCUs.
However, due to recent actions committed by Diddy that have come to light, Howard University has released a statement revoking the honorary degree Diddy was given in 2014, while also discontinuing a scholarship program named after the music mogul and returning his $1 million USD donation in full. The decision by the university comes after video evidence surfaced of him violently attacking singer Cassie, his former partner.
The school released a statement commenting on their recent decision to revoke Diddy’s honorary degree and disassociate from his name, “Mr. Combs’ behavior…is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor. The university is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence.” Diddy only attended Howard for two years, before dropping out in 1990. He was a commencement speaker the same year. Diddy’s actions continue to catch up with him as earlier this year, federal authorities raided his properties in Los Angeles and Miami as a part of a sex-trafficking investigation. While he has repeatedly denied these allegations, many brands are beginning to disassociate themselves with the mogul. The most recent includes the media company Revolt, which he co-founded and has now sold a majority stake.
It remains to be seen how Diddy’s reputation will continue to unfold, following these blowbacks from his actions.
