LAS VEGAS (AP) — USC and UCLA are about to play their final football season in the Pac-12 Conference. Both schools leave for the Big Ten Conference next year. Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff said he was confident the conference would remain together. He said a media-rights deal was near, but didn’t offer specifics. Kliavkoff said expansion would be considered after the media-rights deal is finalized. He pushed back against speculation that Pac-12 schools could leave for other conferences.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — When USC quarterback Caleb Williams spoke Friday at the Pac-12 Conference media day, it became clear that missing the College Football Playoffs has been on his mind more often than his Heisman Trophy win. Williams, listed on FanDuel Sportsbook as the current favorite to with the Heisman Trophy again at 5-1 odds, said he’s heading into the 2023 season extra motivated after a hamstring injury marred his sophomore campaign. A victory over Utah in the Pac-12 title game might have catapulted USC into a playoff spot, but Williams was dealing with the nagging injury and the Utes beat the Trojans 47-24.

Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. made the preseason all-conference second team after throwing for 4,641 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. Oregon’s Bo Nix was named honorable mention after also posting outstanding numbers. Not making any of the teams were such notable QBs as Utah’s Cam Rising. He’s coming off back-to-back Pac-12 championships. Seven quarterbacks attended Pac-12 media day on Friday, highlighting the depth at that position.

Studies have shown that almost half of all students say they experienced hazing in high school. At Northwestern, allegations of hazing in the football program led to the firing of longtime coach Pat Fitzgerald. The school is facing multiple lawsuits. Experts believe hazing happens more than people think and incidents seems to be getting more severe and more sexualized.

Studies have found that 48% high school students report being subjected to some form of hazing. An Alfred University study from 1999 found that 79% of NCAA athletes reported being hazed in high school. Experts say hazing almost always involves a group trying to establish a dominant hierarchy.
UNDATED (AP) — A bipartisan group of senators is proposing new oversight of college sports and the NCAA. A bill being worked would pre-empt state laws and create national regulations for name, image and likeness compensation for players. It would also establish an entity to oversee enforcement of those rules, and fund long-term health care for athletes. Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Cory Booker of New Jersey along with Republican Jerry Moran of Kansas have previously introduced separate college sports bills.
MADRID, Spain (AP) — Cotie McMahon scored with 22 seconds left to lift the United States to a 69-66 win over host Spain in the FIBA Under-19 Women’s World Cup championship. With the scored tied at 66, the Ohio State forward scored to put the U.S. up two. The Americans then got a steal by Hannah Hidalgo with 11 seconds left. UCLA’s Kiki Rice then hit one of two free throws with 6 seconds left for the final margin. McMahon, who was the Big Ten freshman of the year last season, finished with 16 points and South Carolina’s Chloe Kitts added 15.
