Here are the airlines adding flights to Mitchell International Airport as travel season heats up

Here are the airlines adding flights to Mitchell International Airport as travel season heats up

Many airlines at Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport will add increased frequencies, or completely new routes, during peak travel seasons. This year is no exception as national and regional carriers roll out routes to Florida, California, Washington D.C. and the American southwest.

Here are the airlines adding flights at Mitchell, and where they will be going.

Southwest adding new destinations, increased frequency

After a down year in Milwaukee, and a turbulent holiday season nationwide, Mitchell’s busiest airline is adding frequencies to eight destinations and one new seasonal route. Southwest’s market share at Mitchell in 2022 was 36%, down from 41% in 2021.

Here are Southwest’s spring and summer offerings:

  • Southwest is bringing back daily nonstop flights to Kansas City beginning July 11.
  • Throughout the summer and fall, Southwest will add daily flight frequencies to the existing destinations of Atlanta, Denver, Fort Myers, Orlando, and St. Louis.
  • In April, Southwest added additional daily roundtrips between Milwaukee and existing destinations of Baltimore, Las Vegas, and Nashville.

Sun Country Airlines continues to grow its presence

For years Sun Country has been slowly establishing itself in Milwaukee.

Here are the new Sun Country routes:

  • In April, Sun Country launched a new weekend service to/from Minneapolis-St. Paul on Fridays and Sundays, with fares as low as $49 each way. These flights run through Labor Day weekend.
  • The airline also announced in May that beginning December 16, 2023, it will fly from Milwaukee to Cancun, Mexico with four flights per week, increasing to daily service during the peak spring break period in March 2024 — up from Saturday-only during the previous year.

  • Sun Country will also fly near-daily service to Fort Myers, Florida, and is adding two flights per week to Orlando and two flights per week to Phoenix. These flights will run from mid-December 2023 through early April 2024.

American to add nonstop service to Washington D.C.

Starting Oct. 5, American will offer two nonstop flights a day to Washington.

“This new service to Washington, D.C. is being added just in time, giving travelers more reasons to choose MKE in connection with the Republican National Convention, which will be hosted in Milwaukee next year,” Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said.

“We are expecting to see a considerable uptick in travelers between Milwaukee and Washington not only during the convention itself, but also in the months leading up to the convention.”

Delta Air Lines to resume flights to Utah

Delta, the second most popular airline in Milwaukee, benefited the most from Southwest’s down year in 2022. After adding service to the east coast, its share of the Milwaukee market rose 3 percentage points; it now accounts for almost a fourth of all service at Mitchell.

As the weather warms, the airline won’t be adding any new routes, but it does plan to resume one seasonal flight.

  • Delta Air Lines will resume its daily nonstop flights to Salt Lake City beginning July 2.

Alaska Airlines to increase flights to Seattle

The regional airline, a smaller player at Mitchell, announced it would increase flights to Seattle.

  • Alaska Airlines is enhancing its existing daily nonstop service to Seattle by adding a second flight to Seattle on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning June 15.
