HBO’s ‘Shaq’ Offers an Illustrious Look at the Rise and Reign of the NBA Legend

HBO has given viewers a first look at Shaq, a four-part docuseries detailing the come up, career and personal life of the eponymous NBA star. Directed by Robert Alexander, the series centers on a sequence of in-depth interviews with Shaquille O’Neal himself, along with friends, teammates and family members.

“The documentary series chronicles Shaq’s ascent to superstardom, as a dominant force who won four NBA championships, league MVP honors, and changed the game,” HBO’s synopsis of the show reads. “It also encompasses his life off the court, from his upbringing in a military family to his deepest personal relationships, prosperous broadcasting, and business careers.”

The new teaser trailer offers a glimpse into O’Neal’s childhood, interspersing home video with interviews with O’Neal and his mother. The NBA Hall of Famer details being just thirteen-years-old and 6’9 ft (2.06 m), at the time, aspiring to be a rapper. It cuts to a montage of O’Neal as an adult, honing in on the earlier years of his basketball career.

“‘People always say, ‘What do you want your legacy to be?,’” O’Neal says in one interview. “I want to be known as one of the greats.”

The first installment of Shaq will premiere on HBO Max on Wednesday, November 23, with new episodes being added each subsequent Wednesday.
