HBO Max has shared the official trailer of its upcoming Original comedy series RAP SH!T, co-executive produced by Insecure‘s Issa Rae.
The show stars Aida Osman and KaMillion as Shawna and Mia, two estranged friends from high school who reunite to form a rap group. Osman and KaMillion are joined by Jonica Booth, Devon Terrell and RJ Cyler in the main cast, while Rae and showrunner Syreeta Singleton, City Girls‘ Yung Miami and JT, Quality Control Films’ Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas, Sara Rastogi, Montrel McKay, Jonathan Berry, Dave Becky, Deniese Davis serve as executive producers. Rae herself also wrote the premiere episode and co-wrote the finale episode with Singleton.
Rae confirmed in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar that RAP SH!T was born from her original Insecure script. ”I think this is just such a unique time in hip-hop, especially when it comes to female rappers, because there’s such an abundance, and it doesn’t feel like they’re all in competition with each other. I’m a child of the ’90s, and there used to always be a tendency to put two women against one another,” she said. “It feels like we’re in an era where there’s such a supportive environment now because of that abundance. All of that, combined with just my own story of coming up, became the next story that I wanted to tell.”
