HBO Developing Film About Former Representative George Santos

HBO Films is developing a film about US politician George Santos.

As confirmed by Variety, HBO Films acquired the rights to Mark Chiusano’s newest book The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos. The logline reveals that the movie will follow “the story of a seemingly minor local race that wound up a battle for the soul of Long Island, and unexpectedly carved the path for the world’s most famous (and now disgraced) congressman. The Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system, waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream.”

Veep and Succession executive producer Frank Rich will lead the film and Mike Makowsky will write the screenplay, with Makowsky executive producing and Chiusano serving as a consulting producer.

The announcement arrives just after Santos became the sixth US House member in history (and first in over 20 years) to be expelled from Congress on December 1 due to ethics violations. He was accused of misusing campaign funds to purchase luxury goods and treatments, and pleaded not guilty to 23 counts of federal crimes.
