James Corden finished out his nine-year hosting run for The Late Late Show With James Corden on Thursday, enlisting a star-studded cast for the Los Angeles-based talk show’s final episode.
The final installment began with a primetime special, which included a segment featuring Corden and Tom Cruise playing Timon and Pumbaa in a performance of The Lion King at Pantages Theater and the last “Carpool Karaoke” segment with Adele.
In the final episode, Harry Styles and Will Ferrell, both veterans of the late-night show, appeared to reminisce on their favorite moments on the stage, followed by one final round of the series’ famous game, “Spill Your Guts, or Fill Your Guts.” Styles was asked if One Direction would ever reunite, to which he responded, “I feel that it’s not a yes or no question. I would never say never to that. If there was a time where that was what we wanted to do, I don’t see why we wouldn’t.”
Elsewhere, President Joe Biden, who previously sat down with Corden, delivered a video message to the host, recalling their time spent at last year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“After a day spent working for me at the White House, I’m surprised you lasted eight years at any job,” Biden said, laughing. “Thank you for all the joy you’ve brought to homes across America, and a special thanks for never asking me to sing in a car. I can’t sing worth a damn.”
Additionally, late-night legends Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman appeared in a recorded segment where they surprised Corden in his bedroom and questioned him on his departure. “James, have you thought this through?” Colbert asked. “What other job will allow you to break into song and dance every single night?”
Following his final segments, Corden bid farewell to his viewers for the last time. “It’s been life-changing,” he said. “All we’ve ever wanted is just be a little bit of light, of levity at the end of your day. Thank you for letting me do this.”
