BRIT rising star Griff has been known to turn heads with her DIY fashion looks — and her appearance at BBC Radio 1’s Out Out Live event was no different. Taking place on 16 Oct., the event aimed to celebrate the return of live music with a star-studded lineup of performances including AJ Tracey, Mimi Webb, Sam Fender, MNEK, Sigrid, and of course — Griff.

The singer stepped out in a shiny blue and red two-piece, covered in reams of tape with her name written all over it. When asked about her look, Griff explained proudly to POPSUGAR that “[this outfit] looked quite different 15 minutes ago. We decided to just add loads more gaffa tape, and then I was cutting it up in the dressing room, so now this is it!” The original outfit was created by emerging Portuguese designer Alexandra Moura, whose work aims to push the stereotypes of gender, focus on artistic expression, and lean into an avant-garde approach to clothing.

Customising clothing is nothing new for sewing extraordinaire Griff, who’s handmade several of her outfits herself in the past. Speaking to British Vogue earlier this year, the singer said that “I also think by going with a newer designer, hopefully they’ve got a fresh look that people haven’t really seen before. It’s also definitely important for me to support Black and Asian talent where I can.”

It appears that fashion has always been in her blood, as the singer cites Business of Fashion and ShowStudio as early influences on her style. “I learned a lot about London designers particularly, so I did textiles at A-Level which taught me the basics of making a garment. Then when I signed a record deal and we started doing photo shoots, I found how much it costs to use a stylist, so I started bringing along bits that I’d made to photoshoots. I kept doing that and people kind of loved the idea that I was the girl who makes all her own clothes,” she told British Vogue.
