With summer coming to an end and in-person events picking back up again (we can’t believe the Met Gala is only two weeks away!), London saw its first fête in the form of British GQ’s Men of the Year Awards held at the Tate Modern.
Hosted by Sabrina and Idris Elba, the awards ceremony aim to celebrate people who made the world a better place over the past 12 months. It should come as no surprise that Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford and actor John Boyega are both on the list — the former for his free school meals campaign for children over the summer holidays, the latter for using his voice and his profile during the Black Lives Matter protests last summer. I May Destroy You writer and actor Michaela Coel is also nominated, as is Paul Mescal for his role in Normal People (and you know, looking really good in a chain necklace).
As with any award show, we’re always interested to check out what the celebrities in attendance chose to wear to the occasion, and tonight was no exception — especially since so many stars used the occasion to go big and bold (here’s looking at you Winnie Harlow!). Sparkle and shine were a big theme of the night, with Maya Jama in an embellished Julien Macdonald gown complete with glittery fringe details and Pixie Lott in a gilded Versace mini dress. Slip dresses also reigned supreme on the red carpet, as did one particular black leopard print dress that was worn by both host Sabrina Elba and Anne-Marie.
