Georgia O’Keeffe’s Photography Is the Focus of a New Exhibition

Georgia O’Keeffe was principally known for her large-scale paintings of flowers and landscapes that often carried sexual energy. However, a new exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is focusing on her lesser-known work in photography.

The prolific American artist was constantly surrounded by the medium, having been married to photographer, Alfred Stieglitz. For 30 years, Stieglitz promoted O’Keeffe amongst his peers both in the sense that American art was on par with European and also stating that work by women should be seen as equal to that of men.

O’Keeffe routinely posed for portraits and assisted with her husband’s shows until his death in the 1940s. It was only after this time that she began to pursue the craft more seriously.

As one of the first in-depth showings on her penchant for picture-taking, “Georgia O’Keeffe: Photographer” presents nearly 100 photographs alongside a series of drawing and paintings — offering a full scope into her prolific career. The exhibition is on view until January 17, 2022.
