As one of the premier contemporary artists working today, George Condo recently unveiled a massive exhibition at Shanghai’s impressive Long Museum. To follow, the New York-based artist has debuted a new series of drawings and paintings at Hauser & Wirth London, titled “Ideals of the Unfound Truth.”
The exhibition features an array of Condo’s invented characters who represent different states of mind captured in an abstract web that reveals the complex humanity that is riddled within the psyche. Each of the portraits contains a range of emotion that is constantly shifting into “composites of various psychological states painted in different ways,” said the artist in a statement.
Similar to his iconic characters of the past, the figures in the art are not based on real people, but are invented to reflect a myriad of personal and historical references. A major influence, as was present through the show in China, is Condo’s love for music. The artist likes to see the practice of drawing as a liberating feeling that can be equated to the same rhythm and tempo of Jazz music.
“George Condo. Ideals of the Unfound Truth” is on view at Hauser & Wirth London until December 23.
Also on view, Danielle Orchard’s “At the Seams” is a meditation on the art historical gaze.
