Could a fashion collaboration be any cooler? We don’t think so. Circular fashion advocate Ganni is collaborating with emerging London-based brand Ahluwalia for Ganni’s 2021 reworked collection. Ganni x Ahluwalia includes an edit of outerwear, dresses, skirts, and tops made from the brands’ surplus materials. This will be Ahluwalia’s first venture into womenswear and the first of two 2021 collaborations with Ganni.
Priya Ahluwalia is the trailblazing British designer of eponymous fashion brand Ahluwalia. The designer is the recent winner of the 2021 Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design, which is the latest in a list of impressive accolades — including being part of the British Fashion Council’s 2019/2020 NewGen initiative and the recipient of the 2020 LVMH Prize. Ahluwalia is known for using surplus materials in the creation of its forward-thinking collections that are also informed by the designer’s dual Indian-Nigerian heritage and London roots.
“I am really excited about Ahluwalia’s first official venture into womenswear and I am so glad it is with Ganni,” Priya Ahluwalia said in a press statement. “Since the moment I met the Ganni team, especially Ditte [Reffstrup, Ganni’s creative director], I have felt excited about what was possible. When I started my research for the collection, I thought about both Ganni’s and my own love of a good party. I looked at photography from the UK Garage scene as well as photos from my own personal history and culture and wanted to create clothing that women will feel sexy and strong in whilst on the dancefloor, whether at a club or at home. It’s been such a successful and enjoyable experience and to be trusted to design the collection using Ganni’s liability materials was something that was very important to the design process. The project has been great in showing how leftover materials can be totally transformed and are worth cherishing.”
The 19-piece Ganni x Ahluwalia collection launches on Friday, 23 April, with a price range of £75 to £1090, exclusively at Ganni’s website and in Ganni stores. Keep reading ahead for a first look at the collaboration, and stay tuned for the second collection to be released in autumn 2021.
