Earlier in the year, Gagosian lifted the veil on a new Swiss gallery in the snowy alps of Gstaad with an inaugural exhibition by British artist Damien Hirst. As an homage to the country itself, the gallery is currently hosting a monumental group exhibition titled SWISS MADE: From Ferdinand Hodler to Urs Fischer.
The show was partly inspired by a 1992 exhibition, Visionary Switzerland, which aimed to challenge the notion that Switzerland lacked a history of its own and set to showcase work that refuted a Swiss “national” aesthetic. As the title implies, SWISS MADE presents modern and contemporary artists who carry on the spirit of Art brut, or art made outside the academic tradition of fine art, first coined by Jean Dubuffet in 1947.
Amongst the work on view, the gallery displays a striking 1916 self-portrait drawing by Hodler, titled Die Technik (1896/97), emblematic of the artist’s Symbolist period; Fischer draws in viewers through a striking orange screenprint, Varnish Tarnish (2022), where a woman’s face is partially obscured by another and Pamela Rosenkranz continues investigating the ecosystem of the Amazon, along with the mega-corporation that has appropriated its name.
SWISS MADE: From Ferdinand Hodler to Urs Fischer is on view at Gagosian Gstaad until September 17. See the full list of exhibiting artists below.
Elsewhere, José Parlá returns with new solo exhibition at Library Street Collective.
