Renowned graffiti pioneer contemporary artist Futura is presenting his first solo exhibition at the Kaikai Kiki Gallery titled “Cast of Characters.” The showcase will hone in on the stylized group of alien characters that the artist has developed over the years.
The progenitor and most recognizable figure in the series is the Pointman which symbolizes “a way of existence that is forward-thinking, and explorative; quite literally a charge to be the point person in creative exploration,” according to the gallery description. First created in the early 1980s, the character has gained widespread visibility after being featured on a series of album covers from British record label Mo’Wax, and more recently in various collaborative projects with brands such as COMME des GARÇONS, Nike, and Off-White™. Other characters include the Brooklyn Crab, Rebar and Geppetto shown in the images above.
The exhibition will feature 12 works in total, including a large 3-meter painting displaying Futura’s eclectic group, the artist’s first-ever character-shaped canvases, and hand-embellished stacked AKARI lamps made in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation.
Futura’s “Cast of Characters” is now available for viewing at the Kaikai Kiki Gallery.
