Massive multimedia presentations seem to be a hallmark for JR. While perhaps best known for his large-scale photographic murals that have displayed across New York City and amidst the Pyramids of Giza, the French artist constantly shrugs off categorization by constantly reinventing his practice through collaborative projects, that have recently included Paris’ Palais Garnier and a documentary recounting the life of Robert De Niro Sr.
For his latest endeavor, the creative polymath created a colossal mural featuring 1,048 portraits of Miami residents and visitors, as part of his Chronicles series. Currently on view at Superblue, the artwork invites participants to take a portrait in one of three photo booths, which results in oversized prints of the sitter that displays on the exterior of the building. The site-specific installation features everyday individuals alongside celebrities and city officials.
