Forget Bazball, it happened against lesser quality bowling: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has an advice for the England men’s Test cricket team. Abort the hyper-attacking style of batting a.k.a Bazball.

“As for Bazball, forget it. It happened against lesser quality bowling, but against a top-class Australian attack it’s back to good old grinding batting and not T20 shots,” Gavaskar wrote in his recent column for Mid Day. “Test cricket is after all, Test cricket.”

England’s approach under coach Brendon McCullum – one that’s been in buzz since last English cricket summer – has been put under scanner with back-to-back defeats in the ongoing Ashes series against the World Test champions.

Under McCullum’s tenure as head coach, England have defeated New Zealand 3-0 at home, drawn against the Black Caps 1-1 away, won a Test series in Pakistan, and defeated India and Ireland in one-off Tests.

Pat Cummins’ Australian side winning the Edgbaston and Lord’s Test as the English batters fizzle out owing to aggressive shot selection has been a larger theme of discussion.

In the ongoing Headingley Test, Ben Stokes and Co are 153/4 at Lunch on Day 4, chasing 251 after Australia were dismissed for 224 in the second innings on Saturday.
