Foo Fighters will receive the MTV Video Music Awards‘ first-ever Global Icon Award at the 2021 ceremony.
The Global Icon Award recognizes an artist or band “whose unparalleled career and continued impact and influence have maintained a unique level of global success in music and beyond,” according to MTV. The network’s Europe Music Awards have long had their own Global Icon Award, which has previously been given to Queen, Eminem, Green Day, U2 and Whitney Houston, among several others.
Foo Fighters, which is comprised of Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee, will be honored with the first-ever distinction at the VMAs as they have “left an indelible mark on the musical landscape and [continue] to influence, inspire, and evolve,” the network said.
The band will join the lineup of performers at this year’s ceremony, which also includes Lil Nas X, Lorde, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo and Camila Cabello. In addition to the Global Icon Award, Foo Fighters are up for three other awards — Best Rock Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography — for their “Shame Shame” music video.
The band received their first VMA nominations in 1996 for “Big Me” across four categories: Video of the Year, Best Alternative Video, Best Direction and Best Group Video, which they won.
The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Barclays Center on September 12 at 8 p.m. EDT.
Elsewhere in music, Common has announced his 14th studio album, A Beautiful Revolution Pt. 2.
