Foo Fighters swept the Grammy rock categories tonight (April 3) during the pre-show Premiere Ceremony at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Conference Marquee Ballroom. The group, whose drummer Taylor Hawkins died suddenly last week in Colombia, won best rock album for Medicine at Midnight, best rock song for “Waiting on a War” and best rock performance for “Making a Fire.”
As expected, no band members were on hand to accept their trophies, having announced last week that they were canceling all future performances in the wake of Hawkins’ death. A tribute to the late drummer will be held tonight during the Grammys telecast, which airs live on CBS beginning at 8 pm ET.
Medicine at Midnight will seemingly include some of Hawkins’ final recordings with the Foos. It debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and No. 3 on The Billboard 200, while “Waiting on a War,” “Making a Fire” and first single “Shame Shame” all hit the top of the Mainstream Rock tally. In its review of the Medicine at Midnight, SPIN called it “the band’s loosest and most dance-able record in a decade or more.”
Jon Batiste leads all nominees with 11 and won four during the pre-show. Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. have eight nominations, while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo are up for seven awards apiece.
Among the performers confirmed to appear are Eilish, Rodrigo, Lady Gaga, Silk Sonic (who will open the show), Batiste, Brothers Osborne, BTS, Brandi Carlile, H.E.R., Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, Nas, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood and John Legend.
