Flea has shared his picks for some of the best rock musicians of all time, praising Chrissie Hynde as the greatest female singer and some guy named Paul McCartney as the best bassist.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist kept it simple while shouting out Hynde in a Twitter post, writing that The Pretenders founder is the “greatest female rock singer of all time.”

This came after Flea shared his thoughts about McCartney during a recent appearance on Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson’s podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name.

“I think Paul’s the greatest rock bass player,” Flea said. “There are so many guys that are great in different ways, but Paul’s bass playing is so lyrical and melodic, and it’s just so beautiful. One of the things I’ve heard is that he puts the bass on after.”
He continued, “A band like mine, a lot of songs start with basslines… or the music comes first. Whereas I think Paul and John and George, they wrote songs and [then] Paul would do the bass… So then he’s doing, like a counter melody, so the bass is like a melody as opposed to just rhythm, and that’s amazing.”

Hynde is currently on a US trek with The Pretenders (get tickets here). In October, McCartney will begin a tour across South America and the UK/Europe. Grab your seats here.
