Following the project’s announcement in 2015, Universal has finally delivered the first teaser trailer for its film adaptation of the popular video game, Five Nights at Freddy‘s.
The Blumhouse horror film is based on the gaming franchise created by Scott Cawthon, which first began in 2014 on PC. Thanks to initial popularity, the game and its many predecessors are now available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In them, players become security guards who must fight for survival amongst legions of violent animatronic characters inside Freddy Fazbear’s spooky pizzeria, working with security cameras, lights and doors in their favor.
Universal’s newly-revealed teaser explores how the gameplay translates to the screen, starring Josh Hutcherson as the targeted security guard. Directed by Emma Tammi, the film also stars Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson and Matthew Lillard.
Warner Bros. initially acquired rights to the project, following its announcement in 2015. However, after two years of silence, Cawthon revealed that the movie was “back to square one.” In 2017, the film switched hands to Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Five Nights at Freddy’s will premiere in theaters and via Peacock on the same day. The official release date has not yet been announced. Watch the official teaser above.
