First Spin: The Week’s Best New Dance Tracks From Icona Pop, Machinedrum, SG Lewis & More

New Music Friday is intense. Hundreds of songs drop from artists around the world, and you’re supposed to somehow find the best ones. It’s fun work, but it’s time-consuming — so we at Billboard Dance want to give you a hand. Each week, we sift through the streams and dig in the digital crates to present the absolute must-hears from the wide breadth of jams.

This week, we’ve gotten a very excellent surprise EP from Hudson Mohawke, a single from Joji and Diplo and the much-anticipated debut album from Bronson, the joint project by Odesza and Golden Features. All that goodness comes in addition to the five fresh dance tracks below. Let’s dig in.

Icona Pop, “Feels In My Body”

The Swedish duo extend the dance pop sound that’s been their signature for the better part of a decade with the sassy, sweet “Feels In My Body.”  In a statement the pair say that the song “is all about hitting your peak, being so full of energy that you want to burst and share it with everyone around you.” While “everyone around you” might just currently include your quarantine buddies, your pets and a few floating heads on Zoom, this one will nonetheless up your BPMs and add a confetti blast of much-needed fun.

Justin Martin, “Stay” Feat. Dalilah (Tchami Remix)

Released in April, “Stay” was the second release on Justin Martin’s What To Do imprint. Now the track gets some  special sauce from Paris’ best Tchami, who adds a swirly, heady, hypnotic vibe on his edit.  Meanwhile, the dance world is waiting on the future bass pioneer’s debut LP Year Zero, which he assures is coming soon. Tchami also co-wrote and co-produced Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love” and “Rain On Me,” along with other Chromatica tracks.

SG Lewis, Robyn & Channel Tres, “Impact”

Is there any dark mood Robyn can’t alleviate? The answers today remains a definitive “nah,” with the dance pop icon triangulating with London producer SG Lewis and the exceedingly in demand Channel Tres (who’s also featured on Disclosure’s forthcoming LP) for “Impact.” The song is a synthy, shimmery, futuristic dance jam that actually kinda sort gives you the high-on-love feelings explored in the lyrics.

“Sam made this instant thing, it’s a special skill to make a song that hits you right away the way Impact does,” Robyn is quoted in a statement. “The track just gave me the feels and it was’t hard to write a chorus to it, especially with Channel’s vocals on there already. Channel Tres came on tour with us last year so I know how strong he is on stage and hopefully some time in the future we will get to be on stage together, with Sam, performing this song.” Meanwhile Lewis simply calls it “possibly my favorite record I’ve ever been a part of.”

Machinedrum Feat. Freddie Gibbs, “Kane Train”

It’s a big, brassy swaggery mood on “Kane Train,” the first single from Machinedrum’s forthcoming LP, A View Of You. Featuring rapper Freddie Gibbs, the track melds IDM, jungle, bass and hip-hop into a hyphy, triumphant anthem to blast in the car at full volume with your windows rolled down and your foot heavy on the gas pedal. Out October 9 via Nina Tune, A View Of You will also feature collabs from Sub Focus, Chrome Sparks, Mono/Poly, Jesse Boykins III and more.

Moscoman, Time Slips Away

Time Slips Away, the sophomore LP from Israel born, Berlin-based techno producer Moscoman, is thoroughly buoyant affair that puts a fresh spin on ’80s synth while also amalgamating acid, house, dark disco and synth. Sounding like a cross between Hot Chip and Pet Shop Boys, the title track is especially delightful.
