On March 12, New York ordered the closure of all Broadway theaters due to restrictions on gatherings. On March 25, Tony Award Productions announced that 74th annual Tony Awards and all associated events were postponed indefinitely. On Aug. 21, it announced that the ceremony will be held virtually later in 2020.
Even though the nominations will be announced in one week, they still have not been determined. The Tony Awards nominating committee will meet to vote on this year’s nominations on Oct. 13, two days before the announcement.
The eligibility cut-off date for Broadway productions opening in the 2019-20 season was originally April 23. However, as a result of the pandemic cutting the 2019-20 theater season short, on Aug. 21, Tony Award Productions announced that only the 18 shows that opened before Feb. 19 would be considered eligible for this year’s ceremony.
The nominations for the 73rd annual Tony Awards were unveiled on April 30, 2019. Hadestown led the field with 14 nods. Hadestown was also the year’s big winner, with eight awards, on the June 9, 2019, telecast.
The Tony Awards are presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
