Final Destination 6 is headed to HBO Max.
The sixth installment in the horror franchise was first announced in 2019, though production was postponed due to the pandemic. Now, HBO Max has employed Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts to produce the upcoming movie for New Line Cinema. Watts’ wife and business partner, Dianne McGunigle, will also produce alongside longtime franchise producers Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.
Watts has developed a treatment for the film, according to Variety, and Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick, who previously wrote the latest Scream film, are writing the screenplay.
“Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of Final Destination from the beginning,” Watts said in a statement. “So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.”
It is unlikely that Watts will direct the next Final Destination installment, as he is currently slated to helm Marvel Studios‘ Fantastic Four reboot at an undisclosed date in the near future.
“Jon and Dianne’s passion for the series is only matched by how much fun they are to work with,” Perry said. “Sheila and I couldn’t be more excited to have their creative energy driving this latest installment in the Final Destination franchise with New Line. With Guy and Lori’s inspired execution of Jon’s original idea, we have a movie that audiences are gonna love.”
