Fact or myth: Deodorants cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s

Fact or myth: Deodorants cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s

During the scorching summer heat, many (in fact, most) of us apply perfumes and deodorants to keep body odour at bay. However, according to some social media posts, aluminium in deodorants can potentially cause breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. In fact, many Instagram users listed the dangers of using deodorants, with one writing: “What are the dangers associated with using artificial deodorants: Alzheimer’s disease, skin irritation, clogged sweat glands, can lead to cysts, hormonal disruption, and nervous system problems”.

But, is there any truth to these claims?

To find out, we got in touch with Dr Sonali Kohli, Consultant, Dermatology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, who told us that “deodorants are generally considered safe for most people to use. The active ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants, such as aluminium compounds, work to prevent or reduce sweating and eliminate odour-causing bacteria. However, there have been some concerns raised about the potential health effects of using deodorants, particularly antiperspirants”.

So, do deodorants cause/increase the risk of developing breast cancer and Alzheimer’s?

“One of the concerns is that aluminium compounds in antiperspirants may be linked to breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. However, there is no conclusive evidence to support these claims. The American Cancer Society and Alzheimer’s Association state that there is no convincing evidence to support a link between aluminium exposure from antiperspirants and these diseases. The systemic absorption rate and accumulation in the body are not well-established post-exposure to regular twice-daily use of these, hence making it difficult to deem them as harmful,” she told indianexpress.com.

The expert added that there are many new formulations with essential oil bases that are free of aluminium compounds and can be used safely for long durations.

Can deodorants cause hormonal imbalance?

Another concern is that some deodorants and antiperspirants contain chemicals such as parabens and phthalates, which have been linked to hormone disruption and other health issues. “The levels of these chemicals in deodorants and antiperspirants are generally considered safe and are regulated by government agencies such as the FDA,” said Dr Kohli.

Adding, she said that while there have been some concerns raised about the potential health effects of using deodorants and antiperspirants, “the evidence does not suggest that they are harmful to most people.”

“However, if you have concerns about using these products, you may wish to speak with your dermatologist to discuss alternative options and treatments,” she concluded.
