Everton in ‘pole position’ to sign Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says he allowed David Luiz to move Arsenal because of his trust in Fikayo Tomori.

Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori is reportedly close to making a loan move to Everton following his breakthrough campaign in the Premier League.

After loan spells at Brighton and Hull, Tomori impressed as he spent the 2018/19 season at Derby County, featuring in 55 games in all competitions for then Rams boss Frank Lampard.

Lampard would go on to return to his spiritual home at Stamford Bridge following the departure of Maurizio Sarri to Juventus, the club legend not showing any fear in handing a number of opportunities to a number of young players.

While Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount were instantly thrust into the Chelsea side by Lampard, Tomori would be handed his chance in the fourth game of the season after the Blues sluggish start to the season, having conceded seven goals in the opening three games.

Tomori would start 11 consecutive Premier League games before slipping out of the side in December, falling behind the likes of Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order to be restricted to just four more league outings, the last of which came in February.

Having endured the worst defensive record in the entire top half of the table, Frank Lampard has sought to bolster his defence this summer and has turned to the experienced head of Thiago Silva who has arrived on a free from PSG.

Now, according to ESPN, Chelsea are willing to let Tomori leave the club on loan, the 22-year-old having attracted the attention of Everton and Newcastle, alongside French side, Rennes, though the west London side are keen for him to remain in the Premier League.

Having moved to strengthen their midfield with the signings of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, it seems as though Everton have now turned their attentions to strengthening their defence, with talks over a loan move for Tomori now said to be at an ‘advanced stage’.

The Merseyside side struggled defensively last season, muddling through the campaign with limited centre-back options, though the Everton had previously proved to be a good home for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma who spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Goodison Park.
