It’s been two years since Eriel Indigo shared “Wasted”, a release that informed our 2021 interview with her. Maintaining her uncompromisable sense of self-expression, something which is just as empowering as it is provocative, she created a new song aptly titled “Rebel Bell”. As usual, this independent artist arrived armed with witty lyricism and impeccable flows to back her pop-influenced rap style.
“Rebel Bell” sounds both fun and lyrical. Eriel notes, “The hook, ‘Ring the Rebel Bell!’ came from visions of pulling the fire alarm at school, ringing bells of freedom, & awakening the revolutionary spirit within us all.’ Lyrically the track urges us to be critical thinkers, to question authority, and to perceive each other as allies rather than adversaries. I talk about breaking antiquated rules as well as conceptually tearing down the idealized walls that separate us.“
The LA-based rapper and singer continues: “It’s also a story of having lived different lives that reflect each other’s. It breaks down constructs of time, identity, background, race, class, faith, and beyond to see us as one people whilst still paying respect to how our individual identities and struggles play out in the third dimension. I want us to cease judging each other; to acknowledge & empower the unified spirit is connected within us all.“
