Milan’s Pirelli HangarBicocca is playing host to an immersive new exhibition by the Turner Prize-winning artist and Oscar-winning filmmaker, Steve McQueen. As one of the preeminent directors of the past 30 years, McQueen takes a radical look at the human condition, by asking important questions pertaining to the construction of identity, belonging, and the right to freedom.
“Sunshine State” presents a survey of McQueen’s visual arts career through six films and one sculpture which seek to open new dialogues on the artist’s range of storytelling. Curated by Vicente Todolí in collaboration with the Tate Modern London, the site-specific installation begins on the exterior space inviting visitors to enter the dark expanses of the gallery corridors.
The title of the exhibition takes its name from McQueen’s latest film of the same name, commissioned and produced by the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2022, which is shown here in its world premiere. “Sunshine State” is on view until July 31, 2022.
In other art news, White Cube will open a gallery in New York City.
