Today marks a sad day as we mourn the passing of Eminem‘s famed alter ego in The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).
Clocking in at just a little over an hour, the 20-track album features guest appearances from Big Sean and BabyTron, and production work from the likes of Dr. Dre, Luis Resto, Foulmouth and the rapper himself, to name a few. Em’s 12th studio album bids goodbye to his Slim Shady persona, who was introduced to the world early on in the rapper’s career and served as his young, abrasive alter ego. The Death of Slim Shady serves as a concept album (as confirmed by the artist himself, who notes that the songs should be listened to in order) and almost an homage to the notorious character who plagued pop culture for years. Its lyricism fuses the very best of both Eminem and Slim Shady, and hears him addressing his own antics while aggrandizing his own notoriety.
All good things must come to an end, unfortunately, and it seems like they were both aware that Slim Shady couldn’t and wouldn’t have liked to exist as a sole persona in this social climate. If it’s any consolation though, Slim Shady will always be a part of Eminem. Maybe he’ll claw his way out eventually.
