‘Elysium’ and ‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkamp Is Working on a AAA Video Game

‘Elysium’ and ‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkamp Is Working on a AAA Video Game

District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has signed on to develop a new AAA video game with Gunzilla Games.

According to IGN, the South African-Canadian creative has now joined German studio Gunzilla as Chief Visionary Officer, working together to launch the developer’s first game — a multiplayer shooter that’s being kept a secret for the time being. Gunzilla itself was set up just a year ago and boasts talent from the likes of EA, Crytek and Ubisoft. Blomkamp will be taking on a long-term role for the studio, acting as an “egalitarian version of being a film director.”

Discussing his rationale for joining the gaming industry, Blomkamp says he sees video games as the next step in evolution after films. “Games will […] become what films were in the 20th century,” he explains. “They’ll just be the thing that is the dominant form of cultural entertainment and [I want] to be in that. Mixing my history in visual effects and interest in 3D graphics means I want to have a home base in the creation of games for a really long time. So if the game is a success and everything works out, hopefully I’m staying at Gunzilla for a long time.”

For fans of Blomkamp and his films, make sure to stay tuned for more updates to come.

Elsewhere in gaming, Fortnite has announced its first-ever Pride celebration event.
