Elon Musk Emails Staff Mandatory Pledge, Says Twitter Will Be “Extremely Hardcore” Moving Forward

In the aftermath of mass layoffs at Twitter, Elon Musk has given company employees an ultimatum: wholeheartedly commit to his vision for the platform or leave their position immediately.

According to The Washington Post, employees were emailed a pledge that they have to sign by 5:00 P.M. ET on Thursday in order to keep their jobs. Those who don’t sign the pledge will be laid off and receive three months of severance pay.

“If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below,” the email read, alongside an online form.

In the email, which was obtained by The Washington Post, Musk said that Twitter “will need to be extremely hardcore” from now on.

“This will mean working long hours at high intensity,” he continued. “Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

The CEO appears to be employing a similar approach to Twitter as he has to Tesla and SpaceX. While the exact meaning of “extremely hardcore” wasn’t elaborated on beyond long hours, it presumably also means tight deadlines and a greater workload, which doesn’t come as a surprise given the company has reduced its workforce by half since Musk’s takeover.

The pledge also cited a mandatory return to working in-person from Twitter’s office and noted that the company will lead with its engineering and development teams, with Musk writing that “those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway.”
