Less than two years after the release of Free Love LP, Sylvan Esso has returned with its fourth full-length studio album. No Rules Sandy sees the indie pop duo step away from flashy production and lead with cathartic and introspective songwriting.
“I want everything to feel like something you’ve heard before, but presented in a way you’ve never heard,” Sanborn described the new LP.
The duo — consisting of Nick Sanborn and Amelia Meath — recorded No Rules Sandy in early 2022 in just three weeks while working out of a Los Angeles rental home. Additional recording took place at the duo’s studio in its home state of North Carolina.
“Even if we weren’t feeling good, we would just sit down and try to make something,” Meath said. “Pretty much every day that we did that, we got a song that we liked.”
One standout from the album, “Echo Party,” contains only Meath’s vocals over simple acoustic guitar chords, a first for the production-forward duo. The single seems to encapsulate the overarching experimental ethos of No Rules Sandy: after nearly a decade of making music together, Sanborn and Meath are descending into the unknown further than they’ve ever been before.
