Darrell Caldwell, also known by his stage name, Drakeo the Ruler, was killed last night before his performance at Once Upon A Time in LA.
A rep for the artist confirmed with The Los Angeles Times that the burgeoning rapper was fatally stabbed during an altercation that took place backstage around 8:40pm PST in what is described as the “roadway backstage.”
Paramedics promptly responded to the incident but no arrests have been made yet. Caldwell was set to perform amongst a star-studded lineup, including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and YG. Shortly before midnight, the festival organizers Tweeted that the remainder of the show had been canceled.
Live Nation also issued a statement:
“There was an altercation in the roadway backstage. Out of respect for those involved and in coordination with local authorities, artists and organizers decided not to move forward with remaining sets so the festival was ended an hour early.”
Caldwell, a native to LA, had recently been acquitted of felony murder and attempted murder charges in November 2020. Since then, he had been on a meteoric rise in the rap game — releasing a slew of mixtapes, including the latest, Aint That The Truth. He was 28.
