Dr. Dre Believes on Using Only One Producer Per Album: “Continuity Is Everything”

Dr. Dre Believes on Using Only One Producer Per Album: "Continuity Is Everything"

Dr. Dre has shared his thoughts on multi-producer albums, arguing that having a sole collaborator could be beneficial.

The artist and Snoop Dogg both recently spoke to ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith, where they were asked about the current state of the game. Dre opened up from the perspective of a producer, “I just love getting in the studio with Find your collaborators. I don’t like the fact that there are nine different producers on one album — I like the idea of one producer on an album.” He added, “Continuity is everything.”

While Dre didn’t specify who or when the multi-producer trend started, he simply stated, “I don’t like it. If you’re a producer, you should be able to produce the entire album. That’s what I thought it was supposed to be. That’s what I was doing at the beginning.”

In response, Snoop explained that this generation of rap has more beatmakers than producers in comparison to the golden age of hip-hop. “That’s the difference between this era and your era, is that there aren’t too many producers as much as there are beatmakers,” he said. “It’s so easy to make beats. They’re giving you all these computer packets that has the drum loop, has this — y’all had to make the loop.”

Dre remains positive about the future, though, reaffirming in his belief that there are artists out there that will break the current mould of hip-hop. “I feel like a change is happening right now, from all this mumble rap and everything that’s happening right now. There’s somebody in somebody’s garage that’s gonna be the next Snoop or Dre, the next Prince or Michael Jackson, whatever, that’s coming up with something that’s gonna change the game.”
