Disney+ announces temporary price cut on ad-supported tier

Disney+ announces temporary price cut on ad-supported tier

Disney has making a substantial promotional move in hopes of boosting the number of subscribers opting for the ad-supported tier of Disney+. For a limited period, the service will cost only $1.99 per month, just in time for when summer films like Elemental and the live-action The Little Mermaid hit streaming.

Starting Wednesday and continuing through September 20th, Disney will make the standard ad-supported tier available for $1.99 per month for a three-month period, discounted from the regular monthly cost of $7.99. Both returning and new subscribers can reap the rewards, which add up to a savings of $18. (You can take advantage of the promotion here.)

It’s not unusual for streaming services to offer discounts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but it looks like Disney+ is trying to capitalize on a surge of fresh content scheduled to be added to the platform this month. Along with Elemental (premiering September 13th) and The Little Mermaid (September 6th), the Star Wars series Ahsoka, the second season of Marvel’s I Am Groot, and a new season of Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory are set to debut in September.

Meanwhile, ad-free Disney+ subscribers can expect a hike in their streaming bills this October. But those price tags likely aren’t deterring too many subscribers, as streaming services accounted for an all-time high of 38.7% of total TV usage in the US in July 2023.
