Dex Carvey, comedian and son of Dana Carvey, dead from drug overdose at 32

Dex Carvey, comedian and son of Dana Carvey, has died from an “accidental drug overdose,” according to a statement issued by his parents. He was 32 years old.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy,” the statement from Dana Carvey and his wife, Paula, read. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee.”

Carvey’s parents concluded with: “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers.” Read the full statement below.

Carvey was born in 1991 and, like his father, became a standup comedian. In 2016, he opened for the taping of his father’s Netflix special, Straight White Male. During his set, he mentioned that his brother, Thomas Carvey, is also a comedian, and called his family the “von Trapps of comedy.” Watch the full set here.

In 2022, Carvey and his brother Thomas collaborated with their father on the five-part podcast series, The Weird Place, launched with Conan O’Brien’s company, Team Coco.

According to TMZ, Carvey’s girlfriend called first responders to a home in Los Angeles on Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. PT, where the comedian was found unresponsive in a locked bathroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His autopsy results are pending.

After sharing the statement announcing Carvey’s death, his father also posted several photos of the late comedian, including one captioned “Fuck the tabloids. This is my boy.” Another image of the two comedians together was captioned “Dex and me working together. What a joy.”
