Avante garde, genre-defying South African music artist, Desire Marea will perform his first ever concert in Sydney as part of Carraigeworks’ 2023 Vivid program.

The event will be hosted by leading queer party-makers, House of Mince and will feature pop musician, Kira Puru and R&B artist, GLO as support acts.

Desire Marea is a KwaZulu-Natal born, non-binary, queer artist  who first came to prominence as part of the Johannesburg-based duo FAKA, along with Fela Gucci. The two lit up the club scene with their uniquely blended rap/house/ambient/tribal sound and non-conformist, gender swirling aesthetic.

Marea embellished this eclectic sound on their debut solo album, Desire and has fortified it with the recent release of their second album, On the Romance of Being.

Between the two albums, Marea trained as a Nguni spiritual leader and they have brought much of that practice to their music. On the Romance of Being was recorded with a 13-piece band comprising South Africa’s most vibrant and diverse jazz and experimental musicians.

Drawing from their club scene background, personal life experience, inherent musical instincts and a broad spectrum of influences, Marea’s sound is a dynamic, evolutional aural journey through visceral bass, hypnotic beats, sensual strings and synth, and lyrical melodies.

Songs move through phases, ignoring convention for the sake of creative abandon.

The combination of Desire Marea, House of Mince, Kira Puru, GLO and Vivid promises to be a mind and soul enriching experience.
