Derrick Rose Is Retiring From the NBA After 16 Seasons

Derrick Rose has announced his retirement from the NBA after playing 16 seasons in the league across 6 different teams. The point guard was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday for the 2024-25 season.

Rose, who is almost 36, has battled injuries on and off across the past three seasons. The point guard began his professional career in 2008 when he was selected first in the NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. In 2011, Rose received the MVP award when he was just 22.

Following the Bulls, Rose played for New York, Detroit, Minnesota and Cleveland before joining Memphis for the final season of his career.

Rose shared a philosophical statement addressed to the sport of basketball on his Instagram.

“You believe in me through the highs and lows, my constant when everything else seemed uncertain,” he wrote. “You showed me what love truly meant. You turned the court into my sanctuary, a home where I could express myself freely.”
