Following Laps One, Two and Three, Hot Wheels and Daniel Arsham‘s collaboration is now approaching the finish line, with the last and final release, Lap Four set to take place on May 11. The drop will feature two distinct 1:64 scale models, an eroded 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo “Safari” and a 1968 Ford Mustang, also in the artist’s signature style.
The 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo “Safari” is notably an adaptation of one of Arsham’s personal vehicles, modified for off-road use and later used for the basis of one of his eroded sculptures. As for the Hot Wheels example of the vehicle, it features a grey finish and various crystal formations. In contrast, while featuring the same eroded aesthetic crafted from silkstone, the 1968 Ford Mustang is finished in matte black and is notably inspired by the chase car from the movie Bullitt. Additional items from Lap Four include stickers, key chains, accessories and a new print inspired by Otto Kuhni’s vintage illustrations — a celebrated graphic designer who provided work for Mattel for nearly five decades.
With the checkered flag waving on this project, which was nearly two years in the making, collectors will have one more chance to get their hands on these special cars. On May 11, for one day only, the entire collection, Laps 1 through 4 will be released at KITH‘s Tokyo location in limited quantities, this will be followed by a global release of Lap 4 via Mattel’s official site on May 16.
