Country music legend’s granddaughter to audition on ‘American Idol’

Country music legend’s granddaughter to audition on ‘American Idol’

It looks like talent may run in this family.

The season 22 premiere of “American Idol,” aired on Sunday night. For viewers who watched the first episode of the new season, the show teased an appearance of a contestant who is related to a country music legend.

Emmy Russell, the 25-year-old granddaughter of late artist Loretta Lynn, will take her own shot at auditions this season, hoping to win a gold ticket to Hollywood week.

Russell’s appearance was shown in a quick clip during Sunday’s episode.

“Your grandma is — what!?” judge Lionel Richie asked the contestant in the teaser.

Russell is the daughter of Patsy Lynn Russell and husband Philip. Patsy Lynn Russell and her twin sister Peggy are the two youngest of Loretta Lynn’s six children, Taste Of Country reported.

For the second time in less than a month, one of Lynn’s children faced a major health battle.

Clara “Cissie” Lynn underwent “a critical surgery in her battle against a recently reoccurring cancer.”

Back in January, fans were also sending prayers to Ernest Ray Lynn, son of Lynn, after the family said he underwent emergency surgery and is suffering from kidney failure.

“Loretta’s son Ernest Ray underwent a critical surgery as a result of kidney failure,” a post on the late singer’s Instagram said. “In moments like these we are reminded that all that really matters is faith and family. We would love to know you are praying with us for Ernie.”

The young “Idol” contestant and Lynn’s granddaughter made her Grand Ole Opry debut in April 2023, performing a tribute to her grandmother called “Memaw’s Guitar,” according to the Opry’s social media.

Russell also performed “Lay Me Down” with Lukas Nelson at Lynn’s “Celebration of Life” back in October of 2022. You can watch her sing here.

According to PennLive, the episode with Russell will air on Feb. 25.

“American Idol” will air every Sunday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Those looking to stream the show can do so on FuboTV. The platform offers a free trial for new users.

The show also streams on Hulu with a subscription. Those who sign up will get their first month free. Plans for Hulu start as low as $7.99 a month and give you access to thousands of shows and movies.
