Update: It’s been a decade since director Cole Bennett founded Lyrical Lemonade as an internet blog in high school. Having directed countless breakthrough music videos for both established and budding artists, Cole Bennett now releases Lyrical Lemonade‘s first short film titled “whyrush?” Described as an embodiment of the next chapter, the film reminds us all to slow down and embrace the journey. Starring in the short are Teezo Touchdown, Alexis Carey, David Alarcon, Hayden Lam, Omar Zaki, and Kentuckyboytyler.
“Remember this life isn’t a race, it’s an opportunity. Our chance to be here now. Each moment is a blessing. Why Rush?” says Rick Rubin in the outro speech.
Immediately following the debut of the short film, Bennett immediately announces a new Lyrical Lemonade album. DOOMSDAY, the first single featuring Juice WRLD and Cordae is set to release this Friday.
Cole Bennett is leveling up in the video production space. The Lyrical Lemonade aficionado took to his socials to drop the official Rick Rubin-narrated trailer for his first-ever short film, whyrush?, set for release Saturday, June 17.
The almost two-minute trailer features rapper Teezo Touchdown alongside model Alexis Carey. Immediately, the frame of reference slowly shrinks to an oval in the middle of the screen, only to reveal the pair’s upper bodies. The two stand in front of a green velvet curtain, passing a cigarette (acquired directly from Teezo’s hair) back and forth, as Rubin spits existential bars. “This life is a gift. The things we create hold within them some essence of our experience in the world. Rarely are we aware of what that essence is…” Rubin opens his monologue. Teezo and Carey stare blankly into the camera, as the cigarette smoke transcends from the outlines of the oval — a subtle Bennett editing play in the otherwise elusive trailer.
“We can slow down and move ahead as we choose. At our own pace. Remember this life isn’t a race. It’s an opportunity. Our chance to be here now. Each moment is a blessing. Why rush?” Rubin closes, as the duo nears the end of the cigarette. Teezo tosses it on the floor and Carey leads him out of the frame, in the trailer’s final sequence.
Bennett shows no signs of slowing down, with recent projects including Lil Yachty‘s “Strike (Holster)” and Jack Black‘s “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie soundtrack. While further details on this next release are still scarce, stay tuned for the premiere of the director’s first-ever short, whyrush?, later this week, and watch the official trailer above.
