Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez has surprise released a new covers album featuring renditions of songs by Taylor Swift and The Smiths.
Six of the eight songs were previously released as part of the “Claudio Covers” YouTube series — also the title of the new album, which is technically being released under the Coheed and Cambria name. The two new entries include a take on Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” and The Smith’s classic “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.”

Regarding his cover of “Welcome to New York,” Claudio revealed that he was inspired by his son and the city itself.
“My decision to include ‘Welcome to New York’ in this collection is two-sided,” he said in a press release. “First, in 2014, my son was born in a Brooklyn Hospital (Welcome Tt NY, Atlas!)… and when he became aware of this Swifty classic we listened to it even more so than when it was initially released, and if you know my wife, that’s a lot.”

He continued, “The other side of my choice is…I love NY. When so many fled the city with uncertainty, my family made the decision to plant deeper roots here. There’s no place in the world like it and no place I’d rather spend my downtime. It’s a place that deserves all its tributes and songs. Maybe one day I’ll have one in me… until then, this will have to do.”
We previously reported on Claudio’s fantastic cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” which is the lead track on the album. Other covers on the tracklist include The Outfield’s “Your Love,” Bastille’s “Pompeii,” The Church’s “Under the Milky Way,” the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Stumbleine,” and “Sister Christian” by Night Ranger.
The covers collection is a nice tide-over for Coheed fans anticipating the release of the band’s forthcoming album The Father of Make Believe, the third part of the conceptual “Axis” saga, out March 14th. Coheed have a busy year ahead, with a co-headlining tour with Mastodon also on the books. Get tickets here.
