Classic Movie “Recipes” Come To Life In A24’s New ‘Scrounging’ Cookbook

Classic Movie "Recipes" Come To Life In A24's New 'Scrounging' Cookbook

Who better than A24 to offer an unfiltered look at our day-to-day eating experiences via a cookbook? In their latest literary venture, Scrounging, A24 guides us through making some of the most unglamorous, un-photogenic and downright unpalatable meals from our favorite films.

Described as, a “collection of late-night, last-ditch recipes and ingenious back-of-the-pantry meals,” the chaotic cookbook features recipes from both A24 and non-A24 films alike. Followed by a foreword from celebrity chef Matty Matheson, the book divides its 54 recipes into sections including: beverages, breakfast, appetizers and snacks, sandwiches, dinner and dessert. Indulge (with caution) upon Craig Jones’ of Friday‘s Cereal With Water or Buddy the Elf’s Breakfast Spaghetti for starters, followed by infamous microwavable Thanksgiving meal from Lady Bird, or Zorg’s overnight hotdogs from Betty Blue.

But not all 54 recipes are this frightening. Mrs. Kim’s ram-don has piqued our taste buds ever since Parasite‘s release in 2019. The coveted dish has a home in the “dinner” section of the cookbook, along with Kramer vs. Kramer divorced dad french toast in the “breakfast” section, and Kevin McCallister’s 12-scoop ice cream sundae from Home Alone in “dessert.”

In addition to a cohesive step-by-step recipe, each meal also includes a blurb that contextualizes the meal within its respective film. “We were looking for the disgusting sandwich that someone makes because they have five minutes to send their kids to school and also have amnesia and have been abducted by Kurt Russell,” the book’s editor Margaret Rhodes tells Vogue.

The production company stepped into the culinary space for the first time in 2021 with Horror Caviar: A Cookbook. In Horror Caviar, esteemed chefs drew inspiration from a range of horror films (“from cult to canon”) to whip up creative cuisine.

Scrounging is now available for $38 USD on A24’s website.
