Clark Hunt net worth: How Chiefs owner acquired his wealth - Sporting News

The Chiefs have transformed themselves into one of the NFL’s consistently great teams, rattling off 10 consecutive winning seasons since Andy Reid was hired and reaching three Super Bowls with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

Any team can get hot for a few years, but consistent greatness requires a top-to-bottom effort. Some of the credit goes to owner Clark Hunt, who has taken the family business and made it one of the most prominent franchises in sports.

Here’s all you need to know about Hunt’s net worth and the ownership history of the Chiefs.

Hunt reportedly has a net worth of close to $2 billion. The Hunt family as a whole is reported to have a net worth of about $15.5 billion.

Hunt’s grandfather, oil tycoon H.L. Hunt, was one of the richest people in America during his lifetime and passed his wealth down to his 15 children. One of those children was Lamar Hunt, who was Clark’s father.

Hunt inherited the Chiefs, so you can’t call the franchise an investment on his part, but the organization appears to be quickly rising in value. Forbes valued the Chiefs at $3.7 billion in 2022, just 23rd among all franchises, but that was a huge increase from $2.9 billion in 2021 and $2.5 billion in 2020.

The Chiefs have nearly doubled in value since 2016, and the presence of Patrick Mahomes along with a chance at multiple Super Bowl wins in a four-year span is putting Kansas City among the most prominent franchises in sports.

Chiefs ownership history

Clark Hunt’s father, Lamar Hunt, founded the Chiefs as the Dallas Texans in 1960. He pressed the NFL to admit a Dallas expansion franchise but was denied, so he founded the AFL and launched the franchise in that league.

The AFL, of course, later merged with the NFL after the Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs.

Since Lamar was the founder of the AFL, the AFC championship trophy – which the Chiefs have won three times in the last four years – is named after him.

The rest of Lamar’s family inherited the Chiefs when he died in 2006, but Clark is in charge of day-to-day operations as chairman and CEO. After hoisting the trophy named in his father’s honor in January, he has a chance to lift the Lombardi Trophy for the second time on Sunday.
